I was at a production meeting Tuesday night, trying to nail down the episode briefs for our latest project. Joe's fridge had died that week, and had been replaced. He and Tara thought they'd gotten rid of all the food that had gone south, but I managed to find The Bad Orange Juice. I had drunk half the cup, and thought "What is this, a cranberry orange juice mix?". I looked at the box and saw, no, regular orange juice. That's when the odd tangy taste turned into the sickly sweet gag-inducer of rotten fruit, burned flesh, and that stink when a rat dies in the wall, coating every square millimeter of my mouth. I poured out the glass and the bottle, chunks that weren't pulp were visible. I spat out 5 cups of water, ate half a box of tic tacs, used 3 of those little mint sheets you melt on your tongue, took a swig of a friend's beer and brushed my teeth with a paper towel. If I could, I would have set my teeth on fire, or ejected my jaw like a test pilot from a failed plane. The rest of the evening was spent feeling that crap move through my GI tract like a bunch of kids throwing fireworks around, and belching up aftershocks of that foul taste.
Anyhow, I wasn't aware of this, but video of Joe Kittinger's jump exists. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Kittenger
The first half of this video portrays it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MkB6NkQscIIt's the McGurk Effect! On a hideous web page!
http://www.media.uio.no/personer/arntm/McGurk_english.htmlEdith is leaving town, headed to New York. Last night was an informal Going Away get together. It's exciting, it's admirable, chasing a career to New York. First an unpaid intern to establish local street cred, then on to conquering the local scene.
James is going with her, and so I'm losing the proximity of two friends. In exchange I'm taking custody of their social circle here in town, a process we started last night. Hopefully it'll make the loss less striking.

Alex the African Grey is dead! |7:44 AM|
http://scienceblogs.com/grrlscientist/2007/09/alex_the_grey_parrot_colleague.phpAh, man. I always thought the Alex Parrot was incredible. Here's a picture Zusty took, as she worked in the same lab.
