Inconstant streetlight |7:29 AM|
I ran until I hallucinated this morning. Then I ran some more. I cracked 4 miles today, and I had to push it to do it. I've been trying to hit 4 miles since last week. Geez, when did I start running again, a month ago? A month ago I could barely get 1.5 miles, now I'm (not easily) hitting 4.
I've also started doing crunches, the way the strongest guy I've ever known taught me. They're easily the hardest exercise I've ever done. You bring yourself up slowly, counting 1-5, then hold it, then lower yourself to another 5 count. Nothing jerky, all the same speed. You do this until you are unable to lift your body the full way. Rest, repeat.
I noticed this morning, my cheekbones are back. I was so damned happy to see them. It was better than when my "love handles" inched back from over my waistband, and about as exciting as when I lost the second belt loop.

Yes, yes, I took a picture to celebrate 4 miles.
The title of the post is a reference to an old collection of short stories, called inconstant moon. There's this streetlight that's only visible from the second straight away on the track, and it's only rarely on. When I round the corner, it's usually dark, but then the voltage builds up enough or it gets hot enough, and it'll usually turn on while I'm running in the right place to see it. I find it strangely encouraging. I have no direct influence on the light, and it is as random an object as any. But I've found if you fixate on some random item or idea, the run becomes far, far easier. I worship a street lamp. Father Mike would be proud.
