Comment on comments |10:48 AM|
Yes, I'm trying to get blogger's comment feature to work. No, I didn't pull it off on my first try. Yes, I'm busy at work, so it's not like I can focus on something this mundane. Yes, I will be notified via email if you happen to comment on a post, even one of my ancient ones.

Update: BAH FUCK IT.

Stupid Skull Story, and I may have just helped fire someone. |2:46 PM|
Woman gets skull back.
Take a look at the story, it's a relatively strange case, but besides that I want you to notice this paragraph:

On Jan. 10, Lane’s car rolled over on an icy canyon road above Salt Lake City. Lane, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown through the windshield. (She was later charged with driving under the influence and not having a driver’s license.)

I'm trying to come up with a joke about this idiot that is not simply "Why did she want her skull back so much? It clearly wasn't protecting anything important."

I guess I could go with "At least when her brain shifted around in the night she was reminded that she had one. She might look into using the damn thing."

Maybe I'll just go with "Idiots like this raise my health costs. I'd want to hold onto parts of her skull as well."

I just received confirmation that a print log I found for someone arrived. An employee at a large computer company apparently forged a document early this morning, and they wanted proof that he'd done it on one of our servers. Who would think that the servers all keep such long logs of something as trivial as a print job?
Well, they do, and they're easy to read once you know where to look.

Some more side notes |9:20 AM|
My idea to set up a service specifically for finding an enemy or possibly an arch nemesis is gaining popularity. I may just contact the okcupid people and ask if I can have all their source code. While I'm at it, I'll ask for the fillings in their teeth, and the women on the front page as my own private dish washers.

Maybe the first "matches" made will be the okcupid guys/gals hating my guts.

There'd have to be some obvious changes to the matching system, since you couldn't just reverse the way people are scored. A good nemesis or arch foe would be an equal in some fashion, someone difficult for you to utterly destroy, otherwise you wouldn't grow as a person. Oh, and it wouldn't be as satisfying.

Anyone can steal a basketball from a couple of grade school kids, dump it in liquid nitrogren and then smash it with a hammer in front of them. It takes real effort to find someone whose whole family needs to be shattered. Without challenges, you just stagnate.

Oh, the possesive form of who is whose, not who's.

UPDATE: I don't know if this pre or post-dates OKcupid's implementing the "Enemy" percentage, a rough estimate of how much you disagree with someone. But if it pre-dates them wow. This update was made 1-26-07

Cost benefit analysis of owning a shotgun |12:48 PM|
Vorpal's brother(D2) and the brother's girlfriend are living in the apartment that Vorpal vacated. Two Fridays ago, D2 heard a loud crash, and when he looked out his window he saw a woman being dragged kicking and screaming to a nearby car. D2 and his girlfriend rushed outside, and said girlfriend proceeded to jump onto the woman to prevent her from being abducted. D2 turned to see the apartment door beneath his had been kicked or otherwise battered in, just as another man exited. This new guy told D2 to "Go back to your apartment." When D2 asked what the hell was going on, the man pulled a gun and repeated "Go back to your apartment". D2 backed off, and his girlfriend had been kicked off the woman, so they retreated to their apartment. They got the car's plate number and called 911.

From what I'm told, the two kidnappers were friends of the woman's estranged ex-husband. Later that weekend said husband shot her, and then himself.
D2's girlfriend impressed the hell out of me, and Vorpal. We have a very good friend in the local police department, and he spoke with the homicide detectives about this whole mess, and they were quoted as saying "That girl had some major balls."

I don't know how to react to this story, and I don't know how it will all work out. D2 and his girlfriend gave their statements at the police station, and I'm sure will be involved in the court case.

I had dismissed the idea of purchasing a gun of any kind in the short term, I just didn't see the cost and risk of it outweighing the potential benefits. While I don't expect anything approaching what happened to D2, if a second gun had been involved, what sort of difference would it have made?
